Henderson's Gateway Dirt Nationals Cut Short with Concussion
Matt Henderson made the trip to The Dome at America’s Center (St. Louis, Missouri) on Thursday evening kicking off the fourth annual Arizona Sports Shirts Gateway Dirt Nationals. With a time trial session on Thursday setting up a round of preliminary features on Friday, Matt logged the 14th fastest time in his group.
Rolling off third in his heat race, Henderson inherited the lead late in the race to capture the 8-lap victory. Starting the $5,000-to-win preliminary feature in sixth, Matt was an early retiree from the 25-lapper on the ninth lap due to overheating issues. He was credited with an 18th place outing. Starting in fifth in his B-Main on Saturday evening for one final shot at the $30,000-to-win finale, Henderson was up to 3rd on the high-side but hard contact with the wall on the sixth lap ended his night immediately. He was later transferred to a St. Louis hospital where he was diagnosed with a severe concussion and cervical strain.
